The Ryan Adams & The Shining Tour

The tour began right before the release of the self-titled Ryan Adams album and ended right before the Prisoner album release. In between was the 1989 album which didn't involve the Shining in the studio or live. In fact not a single was played from 1989 during these 132 shows with The Shining. Instead Ryan opted to do a couple of tv appearances with the 1989 studio band.

2014-08-05 Belly Up Aspen, Aspen, Colorado, USA
From his crusty sea urchin mop to his goofy stage-side manner, it felt a lot like we were gathered in his high school bedroom. If you’d only heard his solo work, which ranges from wistful to inconsolable, his onstage persona is exactly nothing like you’d expect: no artistic temperament, spontaneous crying, or stoney glares. Instead, scattered among an almost entirely electric rock set (“Cold Roses,” “Fix It,” and new single “Gimme Something Good,” to name a few), he’d commiserate with fans about being subjected to new material at a show, and improvise blues songs based off of whatever popped into his head. In a Slayer T-shirt, relating a story about Joey Ramone watching taped baseball games on stage, Adams was just another music nerd like us, banging out odes to the rock gods. Then came “Sweet Carolina,” and with it, a reminder: this dude is a rock god.

This was a great and fun show. Super-small venue, with GA/standing room right up to the stage. You could walk right up to the lip of the stage-- just a couple feet from Ryan and the band. Lots of banter with the crowd and within the band. Loose approach to the songs. He certainly ripped Magnolia Mountain-- he played a very spacy guitar solo against a space/shooting stars backdrop. I recall the acoustic being used for just Carolina.

Having just recovered from going to both the Aspen and Boulder shows, I saw some of these posts and wanted to respond. First off, this Aspen show is an experience I will never forget. The Belly Up venue is just amazing, and being front and center literally 2-3 feet away from Ryan was almost uncomfortable from a personal space issue, but I wouldn't trade it. So, to the questions: Willybubba - Ryan went on really late, so his show was cut short. We could see the playlist and he skipped 3-4 songs, including Political Scientist, Wrecking Ball (new tune), and due to time gave the audience the choice of Danzig's Mother or Come Pick Me Up (the crowd voted for Mother since Ryan was really pitching how cool it was). Based on Twitter posts he was having a hard time with oxygen. If you've ever travelled to high altitudes (even if you live in Denver like I do) it can be tough on your body. So long and short of it, I don't think his intention for the show to be short. Also, he has only played 5

Much of the credit for tonight's incredible performance must be credited to the new band Adams has put together, being billed as The Shining. Turning 'Dirty Rain' from 2011's largely acoustic album into an intense, flowing jam early on showcases what a great force they have the potential to be, certainly more than a match for The Cardinals, who were the backdrop for much of Adams' career over the past 10 years.

It was in the second half of the performance, featuring mellower numbers Oh My Sweet Carolina, My Wrecking Ball, and Kim, that Adams was finally able to open up, digressing from canned interaction to his usual stoner humour and outlandish anecdotes.

Ryan Adams continued his tour last night at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, WI with a setlist that saw increased variety along with several tour debuts. For starters, Adams busted out the Whiskeytown song “Yesterday’s News” from the band’s 1997 effort Stranger’s Almanac. This is the first bit of Whiskeytown material played by the guitarist on his current tour.

‘The Ballad of the Security Man’ was a slow rocker, full of impressive lyrics made up on the spot, like “He gotta walk the aisle the whole f—ing show / Talking ‘bout the security man / He gotta work all night with that yellow roller rink shirt on / S–t.” The song went on for nearly five minutes, much to the delight of the crowd. At the end, Adams said, “It was like every kind of music at one time, so really, nobody can complain.”

Adams opened exuberantly with “Gimme Something Good,” the lead single from his self-titled album released earlier this year. His mood and energy channeled blues gritty indie rock with a slight tinge of self-deprecation. Love is Hell’s “This House Is Not For Sale” was more twangy and bracing than the recorded version; it was almost void of its original emotional resonance. When the crowd howled at the mere opening of “New York, New York,” Adams joked that those chords were the introduction to several of his songs and didn’t get how anyone could differentiate. “A Kiss Before I Go” and “Dear Chicago” made for dazzling arrangements, but the evening’s best song was “Shadows.”

The first half of the set was largely played out without any fuss, as the usually very interactive Adams got on with it without saying a word. This all changed mid-way through when he became very talkative - stories were told and there was even a sword fight on stage with his guitar player, all adding to the entertainment.

After seven songs with the band Ryan decided it best to just play solo to save his voice , We were treated to fourteen intimate acoustic tracks with super crowd interactions and a very laid back vibe as he flicked through his song book picking random gems from his catalogue . Hilariously choosing to cover Bryan Adams' Run to You , the now classic improvised Mr.Cat and covering Patrick Swayze's She's like the Wind. He then dragged the band back on stage to close the night with the crowd favourite Come Pick Me Up .

Having already been introduced to "Mr." Adams in his androgynous varietal, the anticipation is somewhat dampened, yet with an athmospherical sense of satisfaction. Little under 20 minutes upon ending the Natalie Sass session, the band begins to enter the stage to the tasty riff of "Gimme Something Good" from the latest eponymous record "Ryan Adams".

I Falconer Salen var der høj kvalitet over den akustiskprægede udgave af ”New York, New York”, soloridtet ”My Winding Wheel”, den stort arrangerede ”Dirty Rain” og den indfølte ”I Love You But I Don't Know What To Say”. Og Ryan Adams fik fremkaldt en fascinerende følsomhed i et af karrierens højdepunkter ”I See Monsters” fra ”Love Is Hell”-samlingen. Et andet stærkt nummer fra dette opus var ”This House Is Not For Sale”.

Ryan Adams’ stoner jangle gives a similar reprieve. An affecting rendering of ‘Gimme Something Good’ is followed by a string of heartbreakers, ‘Oh My Sweet Carolina’ and ‘When The Stars Go Blue’ included. “Yay, sad music in the desert,” deadpans Adams. Running the spectrum from miserable to euphoric, this year’s Coachella is an emotional rollercoaster, and all the more spectacular for it.

For a person who puts his pants on one leg at a time, Ryan Adams can sure deliver the intergalactic star quality. His most dazzling talent is still his prolific songwriting, soulful poetry chock-a-block with emotionally incisive take-away lines. And he has no fear of a deeply pretty chord progression. Onstage, his retro-seventies guitar solos have few peers for passion, and his voice is agile, with an occasionally silky lilt between snags.

Ultimately gracious, he thanked the audience for coming to see his band of "grown nerds," as they could have just as well gone to see the Who or John Legend. With that, they eased into "Come Pick Me Up," from Ryan's 2000 solo debut "Heartbreaker." He strummed an acoustic guitar and blew a harmonica on a faithful rendition of this frank, forlorn confession. He figured out a productive use of his extra time after all.

The second half of the set was heavy with special guests. Prass returned for "She's Like the Wind," the Dirty Dancing tune they recently debuted in Europe. But when Adams brought out his fellow multi-night Ryman-headliner pal Jason Isbell, the place went pretty ballistic. (Finally!) Isbell the Orson Welles lookalike can do no wrong. Even basically playing rhythm guitar on "Oh My Sweet Carolina," his mere presence elicited more audience excitement than Adams himself (the guy next to us recorded the entire song on his iPhone, nearly panting). Same for when Adams called Isbell back onstage, this time with wife Amanda Shires, for "Jacksonville Skyline" — another pretty countryish moment with more crowd freak-out.

If Ryan Adams has a reputation for being difficult, chastising crowd members or critics, none of that was on display at Shaky Knees. He seemed as happy to be there as if it were his first fest, reveling in the opportunity to be in Atlanta, professing his love for the Star Bar, twice giddily recalling that he’d just gotten to meet Dr. Dog, as if they were the Beatles.

And so it goes with Ryan Adams. There is nothing careful or predictable about what he does. He spurns the idea of artistic fluency with a hard-nosed affront. Sometimes he even gambles with experimental unevenness. And fails badly. Crash, burn, and revival might be the only predictable algorithms in his circuitry.

Sound bleed is a bitch, and Ryan Adams hates it along with the rest of us. Adams played through his collection of guitars during his performance at Governors Ball last night, but the first time he picked up the acoustic — for "Oh My Sweet Carolina," typically the most intimate, stripped-down moment in his set — the wubs and unzt-es and wobbles wafting over from Deadmau5's main stage thunder dome debut were assaulting the hush as the guitar strap found its way over his shoulder.

Tonight was a concert for fans. Less than a handful of the set list was from his latest work. They peppered themselves through the evening as we wandered back through old albums such as Love Is Hell, Demolition, Heartbreaker and Gold to name but a few. We certainly got our monies worth with the set lasting almost two hours. While occasionally the instrumentals may have felt a tad long they were beautifully performed with the whole on stage ensemble working together magically. The audience went from swaying softly to dancing fanatically like at a barn dance seamlessly and happily.

The mature Adams is a wonder to see and hear. No hissy fits, minimal banter – until he’s comfortable, then he’s hilarious – and a belief that, finally, there’s nothing to so desperately prove and it’s all about letting that catalogue of songs do the work. Present the gifts, keep the fans happy.

There seems to be a new found maturity to Ryan Adams these days, whether this is a result of a healthier lifestyle since being diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a degenerative ear condition that can cause extreme vertigo. A new found sobriety and overcoming drug related issues, becoming an author and a move to Los Angeles to start his own record label seems to sit well on his shoulders if his Wellington concert is anything to go by.

Tiny Ruins’ Hollie Fullbrook was a fitting opening to the evening, demonstrating her deep Nico-toned, jazzy vocal talent and fingerpicking skills. Big rock tracks like Magnolia Mountain and Peaceful Valley showcased the pure talent of the rockers ruling the stage. Adams lead grungy guitar solos in true style, flipping back his trademark face-covering, shaggy hair and showing us he is entitled to wear the quintessential rocker outfit of denim on denim. But five tracks into this series of solo after solo, which flicked from shades of Neil Young and Crazy Horse to Tom Petty to U2, the crowd became a little weary. I found it hard to connect for this long when I’d still had no introduction to the band members of the Shining, so far we had no real feel for the group behind the music and who they were.

The most striking thing for me, having prepared myself for this gig by repeatedly consuming his abbreviated acoustic – and very mellow – Live at Carnegie Hall album (see here), is just how much richer and complete a number of these tunes sound with a full band behind them – most notably ‘Nobody Girl’, which morphs into an extended full-blown psychedelic twin-guitar wig-out. That song is one of several “climax” moments, coming at the end of a run which includes ‘Peaceful Valley’, ‘Kim’, ‘Oh My Sweet Carolina’ and ‘Shakedown on 9th Street’.

A few songs later came “Dear Chicago,” the farewell song to end all farewell songs. It’s been quiet and solo every other time I’ve seen Ryan play it, but this version was full-band electric. Face it, South by Southwest crowds can be insufferable. It’s an industry event at heart, which is why so many shows typically feature the strangest audiences, from techies to cinephiles to diehard fans to tired musicians. Still, there’s never a reason to be disruptive and obnoxious at a show, especially when you have two veteran titans like Ryan Adams and The Avett Brothers. Alas, the scene at the JW Marriott Austin on Wednesday night was akin to hearing someone vacuuming in the other room. “I’m just waiting for you guys to stop networking,” Adams joked early in his headlining set, riffing: “I work for Fuckhead Records, working with this band called the Little Shits, they got a show tomorrow. Got a new album out called, No Restrooms for the Wicked.” Hilarious, on-point, and yet ineffective. All around the hotel’s vacuous ballroom you could hear nonstop chatter, and not of the murmuring sort, this was at egregious barroom volumes. To quote Fuller House‘s Stephanie Tanner, “How wude.”

It sounds like Adams was in a testy mood, and maybe he was, playing a spacious ballroom at the JW Marriott last night (from where I was standing, the sound was great), but his ribbing came across as playful, not cruel. Before the show, audience members were asked to not use flash photography, due to a performer’s medical condition. When someone in the crowd refused to listen, Adams, rather than making the guy bleed some bad blood, made fun of the ironic hipster’s cat jacket and even put it on for two songs. He eventually handed it back because he didn’t want his sweat to ruin it. (There were also Indiana Jones references and an amusing, off-the-cuff bit about how Puddle of Mudd played in Los Angeles on 3/11, which led to my new favorite sentence, “This one goes out to Puddle of Mudd…”)

Ryan Adams and the Shining took the stage a bit later than expected, but right off the hop, Adams was in fine form, consistently producing album-quality vocals and sharp guitar work. He deftly bounced back and forth in his catalogue from 2014’s Gimmie Something Good to 2007’sHalloween Head to a goosebump-worthy rendition of 2000’s Come Pick Me Up. He even threw a brand new track into the mix (the name of which I admittedly did not catch). If it’s anything to go by, though, his next record is going to be a stunner. Adams is known for being a bit hit or miss when it comes to his mood, but he seemed happy as a clam as he mentioned (more than once) his affinity for pot, joked around on stage making up songs and partaking in a very long discussion about his favourite pizza toppings. Sometimes the rambling got a little too off track, but Adams would always rein it in with yet another amazing live performance.

A rather telling moment came midway through the set when Adams started to tell what probably was going to be a long story to introduce “This House Is Not for Sale,” but then stopped himself. “Well, whatever,” he said, and launched straight into the song. This emphatic 17-song set (as well as Adams’ stellar previous two local shows) should finally put to rest the Good Ryan/Bad Ryan debates that have raged since his temperamental early days as a solo artist. The affable frontman was in good spirits throughout the performance, cracking jokes about the Gibson Les Paul he bought earlier in the day at Willie’s Guitars in St. Paul (“They’re so heavy. I don’t think I’m tall enough to even play it.”). He playfully teased the boisterous crowd about his past reputation (“You don’t even know what song this is. This might be the exact moment where I let you down completely.”) But nothing in the set proved to be a let down, as Adams and his tight band churned through rollicking numbers (“Trouble,”“Shakedown on 9th Street,” “Let it Ride” ), sentimental favorites (“New York, New York,” “Oh My Sweet Carolina,” “This House Is Not For Sale,” “Dear Chicago”), and exploratory, Grateful Dead-like jams that dominated the set’s second half (“Magnolia Mountain

Following "Gimme Something Good," an explosion of noise to the north indicated that 311's set was underway. "I'm so bummed, I can tell that they're playing 'Down' right now," Adams quipped. Each artist may have reputations for mercurial temperaments and iconoclastic creative leanings, but on Tuesday they were each in good humor and in good form during their respective 70-minute sets. Gallagher was dry-witted and self-deprecating, while Adams allowed himself a couple of spirited and even comic explosions -- one to insure the safety of a spider that had crawled up a band members’ microphone, the other to respond to a heckler towards the front of the pavilion, though rather than lash out Adams neutralized the situation by announcing that, “I hear you and I love you anyway, and I’m gonna play my ass off, anyway.”

After picking up his sunburst Fender Jazzmaster and greeting the audience, Ryan Adams and his band The Shining began to hit the opening chords of “Trouble,” a cut off his most recent self-titled album. This wasn’t a night of the soft acoustic jams Mr. Adams is sometimes known for. No, it was a night of growling guitars, thundering drums and a groovy piano backing Mr. Adams’ timeless tunes. Another cut from his most recent album was next: “Gimme Something Good,” a mix of classic rock guitar and a bluesy melody that got the entire audience moving. He traded his Fender guitar for another and launched into “New York, New York,” a song that shot him into the national spotlight and mainstream playlists. It was a beautiful version of the song. Plugging in and removing the acoustic element was a risky choice but Mr. Adams is a master of his craft. He nailed the quick moving lyrics and the crowd helped him with the chorus, yelling, “I still love you New York!”

Adams, who has integrated country and folk into his ambitious catalogue of songs, is fundamentally a rocker, a guy who sounds like Tom Petty mostly because he loves his guitar, a clever lyric turn, and a hook more than a radio hit. “New York, New York” sported chattering, Woody Guthrie-complimenting couplets, carried by the priceless groove of drummer Frederik Bokkenheuser, who suggested Levon Helm with his small kit and deceptively simple but rock-steady beat. Adams performed in an Ozzy Osbourne t-shirt before a backdrop featuring a punching, rose-crowned kitty in a circular logo whose graphics poked at the Grateful Dead.

Adams’ stage banter is also quite enjoyable. At one point during the set, Adams launched into a five-minute improvisational song unique to Birmingham, with lines about getting drunk at local bar The Nick, hanging out with friend and Alabama-native Jason Isbell (who joined the singer onstage at the Ryman last spring) and a less likely, yet wild scenario — having a party with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. But where Adams’ interjects with humor, he later balances with serious moments as on the ballads “When The Stars Go Blue” and “Oh My Sweet Carolina.”

The performance is everything, and Adams has himself a phenomenal band with him to deliver exactly what’s needed. He’s been with The Shining for a minute now, but it’s still a marvel to watch how in sync they all are. Not only do they provide glorious harmonies (“Oh My Sweet Carolina”) and ripping solos of their own (keyboardist Daniel Clarke on “Shakedown on 9th Street”), they give Adams every bit of the platform a true bandleader needs. They enjoy playing his music, and have immense fun doing it. The base they laid down for Adams to turn in stunning solo after stunning loud-quiet solo — the jam-y, pseudo-psychedelia of “Magnolia Mountain” to the absolute monster that’s become the live version of “Peaceful Valley” — could not be more sturdy. Their timing is beyond superb, such that you’d almost think it was all rehearsed if you didn’t notice everyone’s eyes on their leader whenever he stepped back in front of that giant amp stage right.

The sound (and the amenities, under the recently installed SMG management firm) of the legendary open-air L.A. Parks Department venue were both excellent on this breezy, balmy Los Angeles night ("Playing my hometown!" exulted the raised-in-North-Carolina transplant in a tweet earlier in the day). When the fiercely chunky "Gimme Something Good," which had opened the Ryan Adams album, came next, the show was very close to Neil Young territory, as defined by Young's Crazy Horse and recent Promise of the Real aggregations. But Adams is too bursting with his own inspirations to be a true magpie -- however much his work may echo Young's six-string grit, Bob Dylan's elusive poesy, Gram Parsons' soulful alt-country, even the Eagles' harmonies (notably onstage on "When the Stars Go Blue"), all are sooner soul mates than influences.
