Ryan Adams performs at the Garry Shandling Memorial with Johnny Depp and others

About 500 family, friends and associates of comedian Garry Shandling, who passed away on March 24, gathered in L.A. for a memorial event and tribute. One of the musical acts that performed was Ryan Adams, who was joined by several musicians, most notably Johnny Depp, to perform a version of Adams' ballad "My Wrecking Ball." The lights were dim inside the theater and the stage sparsely decorated with a giant screen framed by three hanging lanterns on either side, a podium fronted by a floral arrangement, and a changing lightscape that started off the night as purple and changed to pink, blue and green.

Ryan Adams w/ The Infamous Stringdusters feat. Nicki Bluhm at Telluride Bluegrass, Telluride

Originally billed as a solo performance, the Telluride set instead became the debut performance with the Infamous Stringdusters. As they were not announced beforehand, there was literally no expectations. The option to stream the performance was vetoed, probably because it was basically a dress rehearsal for an unrehearsed outfit. In the media the song that got the most attention was a cover of DIO's Holy Diver, dusted off for the special occasion.

Ryan Adams & The Shining at Basilica Block Party, Minneapolis

Just a few streets over people were protesting the recent police shootings, blocking the streets. But the Basilica festival, tagged #PRAISETHELOUD, went ahead as planned. City Pages had the following to say: "This emphatic 17-song set (as well as Adams’ stellar previous two local shows) should finally put to rest the Good Ryan/Bad Ryan debates that have raged since his temperamental early days as a solo artist. The affable frontman was in good spirits throughout the performance, cracking jokes about the Gibson Les Paul he bought earlier in the day at Willie’s Guitars in St. Paul (“They’re so heavy. I don’t think I’m tall enough to even play it.”). He playfully teased the boisterous crowd about his past reputation (“You don’t even know what song this is. This might be the exact moment where I let you down completely.”) But nothing in the set proved to be a let down.

The music press from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork posted the covers and the reception was positive everywhere - except with ex-Oasis singer Liam Gallagher who posted an angry reply to Ryan and Noel on Twitter.

And when someone told him to just play through, he slammed the inconsiderate schlub and begged the audience’s patience.

JamBase reported: Ryan announced that he would be playing a festival set this evening which meant close to two hours of some tremendous rock and roll. During “Stay With Me” Adams pulled a prank on guitarist Mike Viola by having two people in robes sneak up behind him. “Halloweenhead” made an appearance with Viola mentioning Haddonfield, New Jersey in reference to John Carpenter’s Halloween. Ryan talks about playing festivals, The Shining, doing covers, moving to LA from New York, the Heartbreaker Deluxe Edition and his next album. About his next album he said, I don't think I've ever worked this hard on an album. It's the most songs I've ever written for an album and it's been amazing. Whatever this was was so cathartic in a way where I listened back to what I had to say and went "That's really messed up!" I feel whatever I'm making bookends so much of what I've gone through in the past couple of years. It's not some thing made of darkness, I've really found ways of writing that can be optimistic and helpful to myself.
