Reviews of shows on the Rock'n'Roll Tour

2003-11-16 Olympia Theatre, Dublin, Ireland
Tonight Ryan Adams has been kidnapped and replaced with an exact replica. He looks like Ryan Adams. At times he sounds like Ryan Adams. But he has none of the wit, the off-hand swagger or the seductive charm of the real Ryan Adams. And he doesn’t have the tunes either.
Full review: NME

2003-11-24 Academy, Manchester, England
Adams is an appalling liar but a good chameleon. His thin tie and jacket make him look like a Dixons store manager who has been allowed to rock. He can seem like a musical Harry Enfield - able to impersonate Springsteen and Costello at will. On the other hand, no one else is welding classic rock to 80s alternative so successfully: Anybody Wanna Take Me Home is probably the best Smiths song they never wrote. He leaves and it doesn't look like he'll ever come back, until he sends everybody home happy with two storming cuts from Heartbreaker - dressed, naturally, in a Superman hood and cape.

2003-12-13 Riviera Theater, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Ryan Adams would like us to think that it's incredibly difficult being Ryan Adams -- young, talented, clever and outrageously prolific. In fact, what's difficult is watching the spectacle of the 29-year-old North Carolina-bred singer and songwriter acting out the whole tired "troubled artist" routine and trying desperately hard to convince us of his genius.

2004-01-18 Nottingham Rock City, Nottingham, England
He strolled onto the stage wearing spectacles and holding a bottle of red wine, which would be completely finished by the end of the night. The opening track was 'So Alive', which is taken from his album 'Rock n Roll' - most of the set consisted of tracks from that album. It sent a wave of energy through the audience, causing them to jump, bounce, cheer, shout. Ryan with his new hairstyle maintained the high energy pace by kicking straight in to '1974'.

2004-01-22 Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool, England
Ryan’s first appearance comes halfway though support act Jesse Malin’s set, playing drums, and he couldn’t look less like the supposed troubled rock star if he tried. He throws rock poses, laughs when the bass player hits a bum note, and seems to be having a whale of a time just playing music. When he returns for his own set however, things are different. Hidden behind a huge hooded top and lit from behind, he makes for a shadowy figure as he leads his five piece band through a quick fire selection from 'Rock N Roll', the album which wears it’s dumb heart on it’s sleeve and, intentionally or not, has done the most to cause unrest among his longest serving fans. It seems that people don’t want the fantastic extended guitar jam that closes '1974', or the best Smiths song written since 1987 ('Does Anybody Wanna Take Me Home?').

Interviews during the Rock'n'Roll Tour: 3

2003-11-21
'I've been jumping off bridges' Ryan Adams's record company refused to release his last album. So he recorded the next one in secret, and put the cost of making it on his Visa card. How did they react to that? Sylvie Simmons reports
The Guardian

2003-11-24
Who The F**k Is Ryan Adams? He's a former punk brat, alt-country cult hero, a hopeless romantic, a clichéd celebrity, and a self-conscious nice guy who can't commit. Will one of rock's most talented songwriters ever make a classic album? Depends on which Ryan you talk to.

He answers the phone like a petulant teenager: another day, another interview to sulk his way through. Two minutes later, he’s lost his temper, raging about the press and his record company and the confederacy of dunces railing against him. A minute after that he’s distracted by the present his guitarist Johnny McNabb has bought for his girlfriend, attention clearly wandering. And he ricochets from mood to mood for the next twenty minutes, until he’s convinced himself – quite wrongly – that ROLL
