His thin tie and jacket make him look like a Dixons store manager who has been allowed to rock. He can seem like a musical Harry Enfield - able to impersonate Springsteen and Costello at will. On the other hand, no one else is welding classic rock to 80s alternative so successfully: Anybody Wanna Take Me Home is probably the best Smiths song they never wrote. He leaves and it doesn't look like he'll ever come back, until he sends everybody home happy with two storming cuts from Heartbreaker - dressed, naturally, in a Superman hood and cape.
