Killer (2015)

Phoebe Bridgers is a musical unicorn. When I listen to her sing and play guitar, it feels to me like what it feels like when I listen to Bob Dylan. It’s like having an experience that seems devoid of bullshit. There’s a taste of blood in the words and she is separated from the pain but a few tiny silver threads. The threads are probably the hair of some wild animal she killed with her bare hands and turned into an animal cape that flows behind her as she rides her stallion, Mortimer through the dusty wasteland of modern music.

I was lucky enough to record just her singing and playing my Buck Owens acoustic. She got all the same kinds of sounds I get out of Buck which I found odd. Most folks pick up Buck and say, “fuck- I can’t get a good sound out of this thing how do you make it sound like you do” and then shake their head. The reason Buck ever sounds good is cause you mean it when you play the guitar. Any guitar sounds good when you mean it.

Phoebe could probably make a jar of sand sound like Blood On The Tracks. I am really thankful for the day my pal Marshall brought her around to the studio to lay this single down. These are the first takes I think and there were two more but she was rapping and beat boxing in those and they didn’t fit.

Phoebe works as an embittered prison guard at Rose Hill Correctional Facility in Boomerang California and is into crystal magic and vintage unopened cereal. You get to hear Doc Patt play just a touch of pedal steel on here and thats all besides the hum of the U47 and U67 and the A800 Studer tape machine.

Long may she rule her grossly wicked song world.
