Gillian Welch and David Rawlings brought out surprise guests Norah Jones and then Ryan Adams at their Bowery Ballroom NYC show on July 14, 2004. Gillian announced that this was Ryan's first appearance on a stage since his little accident. They played a beautiful rendition of To Be Young (is to be sad is to be high) with beautiful harmonies. Then for an encore, they sang Neil Young's Helpless. Ryan was in great spirits. It was hard to tell if his wrist fracture was giving him problems or not. I was watching him adjust the mike stand while holding his guitar and struggling with it a little bit. He seemed to strum pretty well. He was very well received by the crowd.
